Description

Appletree opened in 1995 with a mission to support children who have been severely traumatised to grow socially and emotionally and to cope with school.

We have two special primary schools and two children's homes for girls and boys age 6 to 12 years.

In the last three years we have helped 95% of our leavers to return to families and day schools before they reach teenage years. This has included successes preventing adoption breakdown.

We are successful in our aims because our programmes provide and promote resilience.

We remove the disruptive impact of placement change.

We provide a stable environment and integrated therapeutic service and we engage our children in stimulating education.

At Appletree, Fell House and Willow Bank we help our children to change so that they can experience happiness in their lives. In order for this healing to occur they need to experience stable, nurturing and thoughtful adults upon whom they can rely. They need to be loved, respected, cared for and educated.

Our clinical team helps this process in two ways. Firstly they provide direct therapeutic intervention with our children and, where appropriate, their families.

All of our children have their own individual weekly therapy.

Secondly they provide consultation to the teams working with the children. The aim of this consultation is to assist all the teams to make their interactions with our children facilitate positive change.

In the school environment we provide small class sizes and a high staff to child ratio.

After admission, every child has an initial speech and Language Communication Assessement carried out by our Speech and Language Therapist. If  necessary individualised speech and language interventions are implemented.

Alongside this, we have our own School Nurse, access to Occupational Therapy services and an Independent Visitor for the children.

We have worked with a number of local authorities nationwide helping them take care ofthe Health, Education and Care needs of girls and boys with emotional and learning difficulties. This is usually due to early traumatic experiences.
Our high staff ratios and experienced teams enable us to provide a structured, therapeutic, twenty-four hour programme which focuses on helping children to form positive relationships. These relationships enable the children to increase their self-esteem, which in turn allows them to acquire the skills which they need to succeed in school andat home. We do not exclude children so they experience emotional or 'felt' security.
