On discussion with parents/carers

How do you identify special educational needs and disabilities?

Most important step to identifying children with learning disabilities is to recognise the behaviours that they typically display. There are many different behaviours that a child with learning disability can display however common behaviours the most children with learning disabilities demonstrate fall into two categories: Internalising and externalising behaviours, a child who demonstrates internalising behaviour is not necessarily introvert. Instead they become quiet and withdrawn when faced with learning situations that they are not confident in. Other internalising behaviours include boredom, disorganisation and inattention. A child who demonstrates externalising behaviours is not necessarily extrovert. Instead they become loud and disruptive when they are faced with learning situations that they are not confident in.

How do you involve parents/carers?

Parents have vital and unique knowledge about their child?s needs, developing a relation with parents based on mutual trust and respect is the cornerstone of the partnership between practitioners and parents / carers. We should involve parents in providing information about their child prior to child starting. We should ask the questions that will help us to gather the information we need. We can set up a small comfortable parent?s space for parents waiting or setting their children. It can also provide an opportunity to support parents to get to know each other by introduction, coffee morning etc. We should encourage parents to tell us social stories about their child, babyhood, family holiday?s etc. We also should encourage hold regular parent / child events such as trips or picnics to make sure those parents are aware of events that may be happening in the setting.

How do you support a child’s learning and development?

We will share information with parents about how processes work admission procedure for early identification, referrals, transition etc. It is the practitioners? responsibility to develop positive partnerships with parents, involving them in all decisions affecting their children?s learning and education. We will provide them with different resources to encourage their learning and development. We will set up the meetings to discuss all the concerns and will find out the way to overcome these concerns.

How do you meet a child’s educational needs?

We will provide a welcoming approach to children, parents and carers. We will use flexible educational arrangements according to the child?s needs and also will monitor the child?s progress through observations, interventions, assessments and focuses. We will provide extra services and support in a child?s setting. We will ensure staff access and enjoy high quality SEN training. We will use a step by step approach to meet their needs.

How do we know my child is achieving agreed outcomes?

We will provide the children with both child initiated and adult led activities. We will carry out observations on the child?s learning that will help us to plan activities accurately for the child?s individual needs and learning abilities also ensure that children are progressing in the right direction and to make sure that if children are behind on their development, we make the necessary adaptation to suit the level they are at. We will set up meetings with parents to discuss their child?s progress and achievements.

How do you adapt for a child with extra needs?

We will plan opportunities according children?s abilities. We will use interactive board for teaching and use pictures to build their understanding and confidence. We will contact SENCO to provide a guideline for suitable teaching resources. We will invite SENCO into the setting to help the child with SEN. Also encourage staff to do one to one support for learning.

How accessible is your service, outside and inside?

Enabling environments encourage babies and young children to play because they feel relaxed and comfortable and at home in them. We will set up indoor space needs carefully; it will be flexible to accommodate children?s changing needs and interest. Resources will be high quality and attractive to play. Book will be attractive and well maintained and will reflect children?s fascinations. Resources such as blocks for building with, felt pens, chalks or pencils for mark making, clothes for dressing up in and smaller items such as cars, dolls and jigsaws will accessible by children themselves. We will provide good access to outdoor space on a daily basis and also will set up lots of activities outside to play with. Climbing frames, dolls house, water and sand tray will be outside to encourage their physical development.

How do you involve children in outings and trips?

School trips are a positive teaching tool that help and enhance the social and emotional development of all learners. Extra stimulation in new environments will beneficial to SEN pupils and help teach life skills and improve independence. We will ensure that extra attention is given to the child, they are made aware of the surroundings, engage in activities, one to one support will be given and child kept on the right track to maintain and sustain the level of interest.

How do you work with other organisations?

When we recognise children?s disabilities and once the correct permissions are in place, we will endeavour to work with all involved external agencies and maintain a two way communication process in relation to the child?s well-being, educational, emotional and social development.

How do you support children when they start and leave?

We will create a warm and welcoming environment for children. Once the children join the setting they will be gradually phased in, in agreement with parents, initially parents being present at the nursery then slowly reducing their presence as the child familiarises with staff and setting. In the leaving stage we will talk and explain the situations, why it has happened; encourage them with the positive side; relate through stories and rhymes; be patient and wait until they are ready; support their decisions; guide them into the right direction.

How are you/staff trained in extra needs?

We will arrange and provide SEN training. Staff will be encouraged to feedback on their training and we will endeavour to fulfill and possible training gaps that may arise. We will invite external agencies to assess and support from external point of view.

What is your policy on compliments, complaints, concerns?

Any compliments, concerns and complaints should be addressed to the nursery in the first instance; these will be acknowledged within the specified time and the resolution to follow. If the resolution is not satisfactory the complaint will be escalated to the local LA.
