Description

The Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service is for children and young people with speech, language and communication difficulties and/or swallowing problems.

There is also a service for adults who stammer. We work in partnership with children, their parents/carers and other professionals to help the child to achieve his/her communication potential and to promote independence and self-management.

The service is delivered across a variety of community settings including schools, nurseries, health centres, children's centres and the child's home.

We also provide pre-referral advice in our 'drop-in' sessions for preschool and school-aged children. These are currently held in schools and children's centres across Oldham.

Under 5s drop in sessions

If your child is under 5 then please contact your local children’s centre and ask to speak to the Right Start team for Parenting advice and support.

If your child attends a school or setting, please discuss your concerns with the SENCo. They can help get a support plan in place and work with you to support your child at home too.

All early years settings in Oldham and Reception classes should have access to an Early Years WellComm toolkit and this is also used by the Right Start teams in Oldham. The toolkit can be used to quickly identify areas of concern in language, communication, and interaction development in order to ensure early targeted intervention. WellComm - GL Assessment (gl-assessment.co.uk)

ICAN is a great resource for families, you can track your child’s progress, look at speech and language development from 0-17 years and access sources of advice.

If you are concerned that your child is not speaking in certain situations, such as school or nursery, the Selective Mutism Information & Research Association has information and support for families. Information for Parents - SMIRA (selectivemutism.org.uk)

If you are concerned that your child is stammering, please visit the STAMMA UK website. Get Support | STAMMA

The Speech and Language Therapy Team is based at the Integrated Care Centre in Oldham Health and Social Services | Oldham Council.

Please contact them if you could like to make a referral for your child. We recommend that you do speak to the Right Start team (under 5s) or your child’s nursery or school if you are thinking of making a referral.
