Music Therapy is a specialized established clinical discipline which aims to help individuals whose lives are affected by disability (learning or physical), injury or illness, and uses all aspects of music in order to unlock potential.
Aims
- To support individuals’ communication and health needs with a bespoke combination of improvised or pre-composed instrumental music and voice
- To offer one to one or small group music therapy sessions
- To work alongside other professionals to provide a holistic joined up approach to an individuals’ care
- To develop confidence in general use of music with staff that work alongside individuals
Music Therapy will be delivered by a Health and Care Professions Council registered qualified music therapist employed by OMS.
Settings will identify individuals who they feel would benefit from music therapy. The role of music therapist is not to teach music or for the individual to learn to play an instrument, but to work with the natural musicality styles and genres to offer meaningful interaction.
As each individual is unique the programme will be tailored to the needs of individuals and timetabled by the setting. The agreement will be a minimum of 0.5 day (3 hours) per week.
Music therapy can help individuals with Autism, PMLD, SLD, EBD, Neurological conditions, Dementia and other Mental Health disorders.
