The ‘Lowside Brickworks’ area of the site was notified a SSSI in 1989 because of its national geological importance.

The site is made up of a disused quarry on a steep hillside near Glodwick and although the quarry face is unstable, rock piles have been created so people can safely collect fossils.

The rocks are 100 million years older than any dinosaur, and 'fossil hunters' can find impressions of shells, plants, fish scales and water 'fleas'.
