Oldham Borough Games was a pilot event that ran in 2005 as the Area Games between the six wards of Oldham. The six wards are: West Oldham, East Oldham, Failsworth & Hollinwood, Saddleworth & Lees, Royton & Shaw, and Chadderton. The Borough Games help enable local children to participate in a community cohesion and inclusion sporting event and giving them the opportunity to meet and compete with other young people from different cultures and backgrounds. Its success in the first year helped it establish itself as Oldham’s largest participated competitive sports event. The event also aims to strengthening the links between the schools, community and local sports clubs.
This year saw a huge increase in the number of young people and volunteers involved at the borough games, we had 315 competitors, an increase of 95 competitors (43%) from the previous year.
The event hosted the following sports competitions: Athletics, Cricket, Dance, Football, Netball and Rugby.
Each ward had a team representing each of the above sports, in total we had:
Winners of each sports are as follows:
Tag Rugby = Royton & Shaw
High 5 Netball = Saddleworth and Lees
Cricket = Failsworth & Hollinwood
Football = Royton & Shaw
Athletics = East Oldham
Dance = this was a non competition based and all six wards took part and finished off with an end performance
The overall winners of the Borough Games were Royton & Shaw who were presented with certificates, medals and a trophy.
