The Local Authority in collaboration with the Oldham Race Equality partnership have published Guidelines and Procedures for Responding to Racist Incidents to support schools and other settings in dealing effectively with incidents and in creating an inclusive curriculum and ethos.
Systems are well established for the weekly reporting of any racist incidents in schools and other settings to the Local Authority. This is a weekly notification of Racially Motivated Incidents (MORMI) reporting system for schools to report racist incidents centrally to Children, Young People and Families (CYPF) directorate. From September 2006 CYPF and its school partners have pioneered a web based reporting system and database to facilitate easier reporting and trend analysis.
CYPF produces an annual report on ‘Monitoring, Reporting and Responding to Racist Incidents in Schools’. This report is shared with schools and partners and it offers an analysis of patterns in racist incidents as well as good practice in dealing with incidents and areas for further development. CYPF works with schools and other HCIMG partners as necessary to address issues of wider community tension that may arise in an around schools.
