The overall aim of this theme is to reduce the fear of crime within the community and to ensure that residents are satisfied with the area as a place to live.
The Key Issues that this theme area is hoping to tackle are:
A reduction in crime including
domestic burglary
Youth crime
Vehicle crime

Projects
A Safer NDC - This project consists of a three-tiered combination to support ongoing work. This work is centred on the overall objectives of reducing crime and disorder but specifically focuses on the reduction of domestic burglary. The three key elements to this projects are: making safer, gating alleyways and increasing business security.
Making homes safer by target hardening properties (originally the Safe and Secure Project) supplying advice and support to victims with the added benefits of assistance in adding additional security to thier homes so reducing instances or repeat victimisation.
Gating alleyways / Alleyways (Link - Map) - to provide maintenance and support to alleyways already benefiting from the installation of gates. In addition any outstanding gating actiivity to be completed to reduce the possibility of domestic burglary even further.
Increasing the security of business in the NDC. (Business Security Grant) Business in the NDC area are eligible to apply for a grant to increase security.

NDC Police Team – The NDC Police Team sits within the area Neighbourhood Police team. Their role is to work with the community and local authority to reduce crime and disorder and deal with the local issues that affect people's quality of life. The NDC funds two police constables and two PCSO's dedicated to Hathershaw and Fitton Hill. The wider Neighbourhood Policing Team consists of one seargent four PC's and four PCSO's that cover Alexandra and Medlock wards.
Anti Social Behaviour Officers & Crime Reduction Officer – We employ a dedicated crime reduction officer & an Anti Social behaviour in the area from Oldham Community Safety Unit. They are responsible for managing the target hardening projects. Anti Social Behaviour Officer leads on tackling anti social behaviour cases within the area and has the ability to take Anti social Behaviour Orders forward.
Youth Inclusion Project –(YIP) Provides a range of activites for young people at risk of offending to help iomprove their social and personal skills. Youth workers are also involved in a number of outreach sessions engage with young people on the streets in the area.

NDC has adopted a strategy that tackles fear of crime and ensures that residents are satisfied with the area that they live. The key targets are:
The percentage of residents feeling unsafe walking alone after dark will have fallen to 10% or less.
To reduce domestic burglary by 30% by 08/09 based on 04/05 targets achieved.
To reduce vehicle crime by 26% by 08/09 based on 04/05 targets achieved.
To reduce criminal damage by 30% based on 04/05 targets achieved.
