One of the biggest challenges facing us all over the next decade is our ageing population. One of the most important things older people tell us they want as they get older is to stay in their own homes and retain independence for as long as possible.
The current provision of services for many older people is focused on providing intensive support once problems arise. Shifting the emphasis to providing lower level support - before people develop intensive needs - prevents or delays the movement into services like hospital and residential care. Lower level practical support helps to promote and maintain independence for older people.
Oldham Council has devised a Preventative Strategy, which looks at how we can develop integrated and co-ordinated services that will help older people to remain independent for longer
