NVQ Level 3 and 4 for Learning Mentors

Who is the NVQ suitable for?

Learning Mentors working in primary, secondary or special schools; or other support staff such as Pastoral Managers, Attendance Officers or Learning Supervisors.

What is an NVQ?

NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification. It is professional qualification based on nationally agreed standards for your job.

What are the NVQ levels?

  • NVQ 1 is GCSE O level grades D - F
  • NVQ 2 is GCSE O level grades A* - C
  • NVQ 3 is GCSE A level
  • NVQ 4 equates to an undergraduate study level such as HND or HNC but not to a full degree.

What are NVQs used for?

They accredit skills you already have in your job. If they are accompanied by a course of study they can also extend and deepen your knowledge and skills in your profession.

What is the value in doing an NVQ?

  • You can use it to help get a job
  • To accredit the skills and knowledge you have in your job
  • To lead on to another qualification

What is the currency of the NVQ for Learning Mentors?

There are two levels, level 3 and level 4. Level 3 is for people with a range and duties as a learning mentor; NVQ level 4 is suitable for those with a wide range of duties, responsibility and experience.

NVQ 3 is accepted as an entrance requirement for a foundation degree, a degree course taking around 3 years part time, work-based but without honours.  Level 4 may count directly towards a degree level qualification

NVQ 3 or 4 are good qualifications to have if you are working as a learning mentor or if you are applying for another job as a learning mentor.

Can I do the NVQ 3 & 4 for Learning Mentors if I am not working?

No: you will not be able to complete the evidence, which all relies on you having a job as a learning mentor.

Can I do any other courses if I am not eligible for the NVQ?

Do I need any other skills to do the NVQ?

You should have a level of English that is adequate for completing written assignments and the ability to study and manage a job at the same time.

Does the Council’s Workforce Development and Governance Service offer both NVQ level 3 & level 4?

Yes: at present we offer both level 3 and level 4.

Which exam board offers the qualification?

The Workforce Development and Governance Service is a centre with EdExcel for the Learning Mentor qualification.

Who delivers the course?

The taught parts of the course with The Workforce Development and Governance Service are delivered by experts from the Children, Young People and Families Service.

What is the structure of the course?

The taught programme runs over an academic year, and support is offered through the year to candidates completing units. There are 6 mandatory units and 5 optional units, a total of 11 need to be completed to gain the level 4 award.
