University of the First Age

The UFA has a philosophy that everyone has potential to learn but that they may need to be given the key to unlock that potential. The UFA’s unique approach to education is that it helps children to understand how they learn. By helping children realise the amazing power of their brain and how they can use it to learn most effectively, we give children the tools so that they can take control of their learning. Teachers and community support workers work along side to become a trained learning team.

As a parent, teacher or carer of children you play a really important part in helping children reach their full potential. We have to remember that children spend only 15% of their waking time in school. If they are to reach their full potential we must engage their interest in learning in some of the other 85% of their time spent outside school.

The fellowship in Oldham has a strong network and meets to share good practice on a regular basis. Fellows from other LEA’s are always invited and our own fellows share their skills with a variety of work places. Marie Greenhalgh the UFA Partnership Manager offers a range of courses for teachers and pupils to enhance and support the curriculum with a particular emphasis on brain friendly revision techniques and study support.

A highlight of 2004 was the Summer Challenge at Kaskenmoor where year 8 pupils from all over Oldham worked together to produce a performing arts video and visual arts exhibition along the themes of friendship, collaboration and unity.

It is envisaged that the fellowship will work together for an even more successful summer challenge 2005 and for super learning day activities across the borough.
