Learning Mentors

Excellence in Cities - Grange School Learning Mentors

Learning Mentors were introduced into Oldham in 2001. The Learning Mentor Strand exists to support schools in raising standards. Specifically in raising pupils’ attainment, improving attendance and behaviour in schools and reducing permanent and fixed term exclusions. Many schools have successfully implemented the Learning mentor programme.

So How do I become a Learning Mentor?

  • It is possible to become a Learning Mentor without higher qualifications
  • There are no minimum academic qualifications but a good standard of Maths and English is required
  • Many entrants into the profession have experience and professional qualifications in diverse areas
  • Experience of working with young people is essential

What skills are required?

  • A high level of communication and listening skills
  • The ability to analyse problems and devise solutions
  • Assertiveness in dealing with pupils and fellow professionals
  • Determination to see problems and solutions through to the end
  • Ability to organise and plan

What training do Learning Mentors receive?

  • School Support Staff induction
  • Access to the much of the training on offer to all school staff
  • Access to the NVQ Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
