Community reassurance for Oldham and Greater Manchester

Oldham like the other boroughs and cities of Greater Manchester is working closely with the various agencies of national and local government and others to ensure continued good community relations during this current period of the national terrorism alert. The residents of Oldham are encouraged to give their usual full cooperation to maintaining good community relations and should note and be reassured by the following:

  • Oldham and the rest of Greater Manchester has a diverse community that is united against the criminal actions of a few individuals, and will not let events divide the community
  • Police, partners and the community are working closely to develop appropriate plans. This is a difficult time for people across the country and this work will continue.
  • The events are criminal attacks that impact on all communities across the country
  • Additional security measures have been put in place at key locations but it is important to stress there is no specific threat to the Greater Manchester area. The additional police activity is in place for the safety of the community
  • People are being urged to be alert and report any concerns about suspicious activity to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789321
  • The community of Greater Manchester will not tolerate the targeting of any individuals or parts of the community. People are encouraged to report any incidents and the police will take appropriate action
  • The threat level has been raised to ‘critical’ and the police will respond with appropriate measures to protect the public. This includes additional officers, including armed patrols, at key locations in a bid to reassure the public.
  • All forces in the UK are using additional stop and search powers for the safety of the whole community and they are being used in a responsible way to respond to the situation.
  • Regular updates on the situation will be shared with the community. Anyone who wants to contact the police with information should use the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789321, through the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555111, or to report any community concerns the Greater Manchester Police website at www.gmp.police.uk
  • In Oldham the community can also contact their local neighbourhood staff and/or Police Staff member Meena Yasin on 0161 856 8818.
