In 2006, Oldham Council, in partnership with Rochdale Council, submitted a joint scheme bid to the Sustrans Connect2 project that would form part of a package of cycling and walking schemes nationwide to be entered in to ‘The Peoples £50 Million Lottery Giveaway’ competition.
The Rochdale/Oldham scheme centres around improvements to the Rochdale Canal corridor with new routes created to provide connections to the local towns of Littleborough, Rochdale, Heywood, Middleton and Shaw. The majority of this scheme is focussed on improvements in the Borough of Rochdale.
The scheme beat over 500 other schemes nationwide to form part of the Sustrans Connect2 package of 99 schemes that won £50 million of National Lottery funding in December 2007.
