The Council adopted the Oldham Cycling Strategy (PDF 1.02Mb) in July 2002. Subsequently, a Cycling & Walking Officer post was created and this post has responsibility for the implementation of the strategy.
A master plan for the future development of a network of safer cycle routes across the Borough of Oldham, to be known as the Oldham Cycle Network, has been prepared by the Oldham Cycling Officer.
A full consultation exercise on the proposed Oldham Cycle Network has been prepared to enable individuals, organisations and local communities to make comments on the proposals. Part of the consultation exercise includes the Oldham Cycling Map (PDF 3848Kb) that shows the proposed Oldham Cycle Network together with detailed information relating to cycle routes and cycling initiatives. Comments may be forwarded by e-mail to the Oldham Cycling Officer at cycling@oldham.gov.uk.
Paper copies of the map are available free by contacting the Oldham Cycling Officer on tel. 0161 770 4360 or e-mail cycling@oldham.gov.uk.
If you have a concern with regard to the design of a road that creates difficulties for cyclists, this can be raised with the Oldham Cycling Officer on tel. 0161 770 4360 or e-mail cycling@oldham.gov.uk.
To report a problem of over-hanging hedges/trees, glass on a cycle track or road, or surface defects such as potholes, please see the 'Who to contact' section on the Transport & Streets page.
A full assessment of cycle parking provision across the Borough is currently being undertaken to identify where new cycle parking facilities are required at public buildings and public places. In addition, cycle parking will be provided at all new developments such as offices, retail outlets, industrial units, sports/leisure centres and residential apartments/flats.
The Council has produced Cycle Parking Guidance Notes (PDF 512kb) to help developers and other organisations provide the most appropriate type of cycle parking facility and ensure that it is positioned in the most secure and convenient location.
Schools across the Borough of Oldham are having to write School Travel Plans as part of the government’s aim to tackle congestion and help people lead more healthier and sustainable lifestyles.
The School Travel Plan seeks to achieve these aims by encouraging more journeys to be undertaken by walking, cycling and car sharing. To help schools develop safer cycling to school initiatives the Oldham Cycling Officer has prepared a guidance note for primary schools (PDF 37kb) and a guidance note for secondary schools (PDF 34kb).
