Oldham Council's innovative training programme wins national accolade
An Oldham Council training programme has landed a national award for its work in helping residents take control of their lives.
Oldham Council and its training partner IntraQuest have been awarded Silver at the Training Journal Awards in the Best Public Sector Programme category after the remarkable impact the programme has had in the last two and a half years.
The innovative training programme is delivered to frontline staff and equips them to connect with residents and help them take better control of the issues in their lives.
Council staff who receive the training learn why some residents feel dependent on certain services to help with day-to-day issues such as finances, housing needs or managing the behaviour of their children.
This new approach puts a focus on people taking control of their own issues and as a consequence improves their overall wellbeing and eases pressure on public services.
Cllr Jenny Harrison, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Safeguarding, said: “Many residents feel as though they are dependent on public services when they’re actually more than capable of managing their own issues.
“Now our staff are trained to support residents in being more independent which has proven to have a positive impact on their family’s wellbeing as a whole.
“This is all part of us being a Cooperative Council. We’re doing our bit, residents are doing their bit and we’re seeing big improvements in key social issues, as well as easing pressure on our services.”
Over 500 members of frontline staff have been trained as the initiative has been introduced throughout Oldham Council. Improvements in engagement and outcomes for families have been seen.
Staff from other local authorities, such as Trafford, Rochdale, Salford and the East Riding of Yorkshire, together with Greater Manchester Police, have already benefitted from this award-winning training.
