I am a 62 yr old pensioner and have lived in this area of Hathershaw nearly all my life.

My name is Sylvia, I was born and bred on Ashton Road and Hadfield Street and I have see this area go up and down. I think at the moment it is coming up again. I have always wanted to make a difference and help others, by this I mean listening to other people and what they would like. So in 2006, my husband and myself were asked if we would start up a Residents Association, which we did, along with a few neighbours.

I started by asking the NDC how we go about it, the help they gave us was very helpful. We started off with about 6 houses, we now have 150 in our association and are growing. A committee was formed, then from there we have monthly meetings and any problems we try to solve before our next meeting. We also have a bank account we raise funds to improve area.

On April 4th I have been invited to attend a Neighbourhoods Together Meeting, to learn about the different agendas the NDC are involved in. I am looking forward to this, I can learn how to make our community better.
