Mayor's International Disaster Fund

Disaster Fund totaliser

The ability of Oldham to respond quickly to appeals following international disasters is set to be significantly improved with the launch of the Mayor’s International Disaster Fund.

The fund has been set up with an initial target of £500,000 to help alleviate suffering caused by the earthqake in south Asia. However it is planned that it will be used to help the Borough co-ordinate funding for future disasters.

The current fund total is £39,632.73.

The fund has been set up as a partnership between the Council, the local voluntary sector, the Primary Care Trust, local media and the Interfaith Forum.

Setting up a single permanent fund to be used to help in any international disaster will make fundraising simpler and also enable money to be sent to where it is needed far quicker.

The funding will be used for sanitiation, vaccination and clean water in the short term and improvements to the housing, education and medical infrastructure in the long term.

A fund-raising pack (1.0Mb PDF) has been created to help organisations and individuals with ideas for raising money.

Alternatively, donations or cheques can be made payable to ‘Mayor’s International Disaster Fund’ and sent to Natalie Downs, Senior Policy Officer, Chief Executive’s Department, PO Box 335, Oldham Council, Civic Centre, West Street, Oldham.  OL1 1XL

In order to help us achieve our £500,000 target, we would be grateful if you could notify us in writing of any other donations sent to other charitable organisations in response to the earthquake disaster, for example, The Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC).
