Did you know that 6.7 million tonnes of food waste is thrown away every year by UK households - that's about a third of all the food we buy! And about 40% of this food could have been eaten! If you want to stop wasting so much food, help the environment and save money at the same time have a look on the Love Food Hate Waste Website for tips.
Here in Oldham we are also doing our bit to stop so much food being put into our rubbish bins and being left to rot in landfill sites. Oldham Council currently collect food waste from about 64,000 properties with another 25,000 properties due to come on board in June 2009. This means currently that around an incredible 300 tonnes of food is being recycled per month by Oldham residents. All the food waste collected is taken to a special in-vessel composter in Todmorden. The food waste is brought up to a temperature high enough to kill any pathogens and then composted. The resulting compost is then used on agricultural land.
