The Importance of good design

Lord Street mini parkThe design of buildings and spaces, whether large new developments or small householder extensions is important. The Borough has a rich and diverse heritage of historic buildings and areas and new development should reflect this whilst not stifling new innovative design or trying to replicate the past.

Good design is not just about buildings, but also about the wider spaces around them. Urban design is concerned with the quality of the surroundings where people work, live and spend leisure time affects how they feel about their area. It helps to create civic pride and promote cultural activity.

Good design adds to the feeling of safety and security and health. It also ensures convenient and easy access to facilities such as shops, leisure and employment.

The lack of quality in the built environment can be a deterrent to investment and economic development, and the Council believes there are strong social, economic and environmental reasons for attempting to raise the quality of design in the built environment.

The Oldham UDP, is the document which guides development across the Borough. The Oldham Framework recognises the need for improving the standard of design to improve the day to day lives of residents and visitors, and the wider perceptions of the Borough. The replacement UDP recognises the need to improve design across the borough.

The Council aims to provide guidance on a number of design issues and we are currently reviewing and adding to our design guidance as part of the UDP review process.

The Council has produced a number of leaflets and guidance notes on design issues. CABE, the national body responsible for promoting better design, has also produced lots of useful information.
