Greater Manchester Air Quality Strategy and Action Plan

The 10 Greater Manchester authorities have produced a joint Greater Manchester Air Quality Action Plan. The Plan sets out what the 10 authorities intend to do to work towards meeting the air quality objectives. The key actions planned across Greater Manchester are set out in the first part of the plan, with each authority contributing a local annex setting out specific actions that are to take place within their own areas.

The Plan builds upon a background of working together on air pollution issues, which has developed over several years. This has included the production of a Greater Manchester Air Quality Strategy document in 1997, which sets out the framework for improving air quality and highlights the links between air quality and other Council activities, including planning, transportation and sustainability.

Other activities that have been co-ordinated by the Greater Manchester authorities include annual updates to the Greater Manchester and Warrington Emissions Inventory (EMIGMA) and bids for funding through the Supplementary Credit Approval Scheme to carry out atmospheric dispersion modelling. Most recently the 10 Greater Manchester authorities and Warrington borough council have worked together on a successful bid to the Department for Transport to enable a Cleaner Vehicle Emissions Campaign to be launched.
