Crompton Moor Project

Montage of Crompton Moor

With a rich history and a habitat value recognised by its Site of Biological Interest (SBI) status, Crompton Moor, when given over to OMBC in the mid-1970s, has been extensively reclaimed from its farming and mining past and there has been several development projects over the last 15 years to allow greater biodiversity, visitor access and recreation.

The Council wishes to ensure Crompton Moor remains as an attractive countryside area providing opportunities for inclusive use by the local community and those beyond. This involves the protection and enhancement of the environment while providing recreational, educational and social functions and encouraging responsible access to the wider countryside.

The Crompton Moor Project is looking to gain feedback and detailed information to enable decisions to be made about this valuable asset to Oldhams' countryside. The project will firstly seek to establish what type and level of use presently exists on Crompton Moor and to seek peoples' views on what the Moor means to them now, what issues there are, and what it ought to be like in the future. There will be analysis and debate on how to manage the existing site and further to create opportunities for all users. From this evaluation the Council will look to draw up development and management plans which are backed by the community for the future of Crompton Moor.

Adventures in Play

Oldham Council has been successful in a borough-wide bid to the Lottery for ‘Adventures in Play’ funding. £30,000 of this money has been allocated to the site of Crompton Moor.

Initially the idea was to use this money to manage the existing bike trails on the moor that had been built, but following on from the public meetings and workshops that took place throughout May and June, the idea has been changed and the alternative proposals are to create a family cycle trail and skills area, and a natural play trail on the spoil heaps next to Brushes Clough car park.

At the Family Funday event at the moor, held on bank holiday weekend in August, people were asked to look at the proposals and complete a questionnaire about them.

Here are the original proposals:
