Oldham Agenda 21

Oldham Agenda 21

The Oldham Agenda 21 Plan is a document which summarises comments made by thousands of local people about what they value and what they would like to change about the Borough. The document was compiled by the Oldham Borough Environment Forum in 1999 and it lays down suggested action plans for the future. The document is a message from local people to the Council and other decision makers in the Borough. It not only looks at local issues but also addresses more global concerns such as climate change and the depletion of the world's finite resources.  Concerns about litter were voiced by the largest majority of people with the need for more recycling facilities coming in as the fifth most desired improvement.

Partnership Award for Sustainable Communities

Oldham Partnership wins a prestigious national sustainable communities award. The partnership’s vision to make Oldham a place where everyone is proud to belong, specifically through the Oldham Beyond project, has been recognised nationally by the Sustainable Communities Awards 2006. The judges were impressed by how the council has built a strong confident community – economically, socially, physically and environmentally, in conjunction with the major regeneration milestones already achieved, such as the opening of University Centre Oldham and the refurbishment of Alexandra Park.

Oldham Council has detailed in its Corporate Plan (2006-09) that An Improved Environment is a key theme for the borough and its residents.  Oldham Council wants to give people a better quality of life now, without leaving problems for future generations here or elsewhere.

Oldham Council is leading by example and implementing a formal Environmental Management System to the ISO14001 standard.  Through the implementation of the Environmental Management System, Oldham Council will reduce its consumption of resources, such as energy and water and minimise its generation of waste and its impact on the local and wider environment.

If you are a business in Oldham and need help addressing environmental sustainability issues or need information on how to implement an Environmental Management System, contact the Environmental Policy team.
