How to obtain a Birth, Death or Marriage Certificate

A new born baby must first be registered and then copy birth certificates can be obtained either at the time of the registration of the birth from the registrar or at any time afterwards.

If you want to obtain a copy of your birth/marriage certificate and you were born/married in Oldham you can apply direct to:

Applications can be made either in person during the opening hours (Mon- Fri 9.00am to 4.30pm), we request that you complete an application form and we will normally process your application form while you wait. Alternatively you can apply for a certificate through the post enclosing the details on a standard application form or in a letter, full name at birth/marriage, date of the event and where the event took place, and including the fee currently £5.50 for a short birth certificate or £7.00 for a standard or full birth/marriage certificate. Please make your cheque or postal order payable to Oldham Council.

If you were born elsewhere you can only obtain a birth certificate from the Register Office for the area where you were born or from the General Register Office. Addresses and telephone numbers of local offices can be provided for you by the Oldham Register Office.

Please note that as of 1st May 2004 passport applications for anyone born after 1982 must be accompanied by a full (standard) birth certificate.

Copies of records of deaths, which occurred in the Oldham district, can also be obtained in the same manner for a fee of £7.00
