Since its introduction at a national level in 1999, the Gifted and Talented Strand of Excellence in Cities has set out to provide able pupils with the support, guidance and challenge required for them to reach their full potential. The initiative aims to deliver learning opportunities, both within the curriculum and through extracurricular enrichment and extension activities, to raise the attainment, motivation and aspiration.

As one of the core elements of Excellence in Cities, the Gifted and Talented strand has been operating in all Oldham Secondary Schools since 2001. With the recent introduction of Aimhigher and EiC Primary Extension, Gifted and Talented can now be seen operating from Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 5, enhancing coherency and continuity and significantly increasing the impact and sustainability of the programme.
One of the many successes of Gifted and Talented in Oldham is the network of enthusiastic and dedicated trained coordinators based in schools and colleges. This has facilitated the implementation of whole school policies for the support of Gifted and Talented pupils, and has ensured that there is involvement from almost all subject areas. Such in-school collaboration has resulted in a clear and consistent approach to the identification of Gifted and Talented pupils.
In addition to the development of classroom strategies and school based activity, the Oldham G & T network collaborates with other cultural, academic and sporting organisations to create challenging and innovating programmes to stretch pupils and enhance their educational achievement. Such activities, like the transition Summer Schools, operate at a cross borough level encouraging the development of the pupils’ softer skills and allowing them to increase their awareness and broaden their life experiences.
