Publicity and marketing doesn’t have to be expensive and glossy, nor does it need to be difficult or time consuming.

Use online social networks

These days a large number of people connect with each other through online social networks such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, and get much of their information this way. Why not set up a Facebook Page or Twitter account for your activity to make the most of these low cost publicity machines.

You could also contact organisations and businesses in Oldham on Twitter and Facebook to share information and news on your project with their followers.

In particular Oldham Council’s social media accounts can be accessed using the following links: Facebook and Twitter.

Additionally you could make the most of the expertise available through Voluntary Action Oldham using their Twitter and Facebook sites to share information and news on your project.

One word of caution in using online networks is that they will need monitoring, meaning that you might need to invest a lot of time initially in responding to enquiries etc.

Use your local Councillors and community to help promote your project

Not everyone uses social networks and word of mouth is still an effective way to get your message out to those who might be interested in the services provided by your project – or they may want to volunteer.

To make the most of this you need to consider who in your community might be best placed to get the message out. Your local Councillors can certainly assist in this through their networks and may also have ideas about other target groups which you may not have been aware of.

Also, consider any community groups who might be able to put a poster up for you or promote your activity to their members. For example, local schools and youth groups might be interested in joining in a clean-up activity and the local garden centre might be the ideal place to pick up volunteers for holding a ‘Grow Your Own’ skills day.
