Foxes

In the UK it is illegal to poison, gas, asphyxiate, maim, stab, impale, drown or club foxes. Most forms of snaring are prohibited as well. But there are ways of deterring foxes from entering your property.

The best time of year to deter foxes is during the late summer and autumn.

You can try the following:

  • Remove potential food sources
  • Keep rubbish in your wheeled bin, and don’t leave bagged rubbish outside
  • Tidy up an overgrown garden, and remove piles of grass clippings
  • Consider removing earthworms from your garden (some products may be available from DIY or garden centres)
  • Fill gaps under garden sheds – foxes like to shelter under sheds, and can squeeze under a 10cm gap
  • Only leave bird food in bird food dispensers
  • Repair any damaged air bricks (but don’t block them up – your house needs ventilation)

If none of that works you could use a chemical animal deterrent (such as Renardine and Scoot) available from garden centres.

Or try a cat scent neutraliser such as Cat Off, which reduces the territorial marker smells from urine and faeces.
