Schools and waste education

Support from the Waste Education Officer

The Waste Education Officer can help your school with:

  • Field trips
  • Fun activities
  • Special assemblies
  • Projects
  • Resources
  • Staff meetings
  • Workshops
  • Recycling banks
  • Composting

Recycling for school funds

Some organisations recycle items and reward schools with cash for collecting them. Ask your community to bring items from home.

Hold a fair to sell or swap stuff to help children to think about the benefits of recycling and add to school funds.

Eco-schools

Eco-Schools is a worldwide initiative, endorsed by the United Nations.

It is a great way to make sustainable development a part of the life and ethos of your school.

It is an award scheme that gets everyone in the school community involved in making the school environment better.

Any school can register as an Eco-School.

Schools work towards a series of awards, the highest is the green flag.

Eco Committees are formed by the school. They ensure that environmental issues become a part of the life of the whole school.

The Eco Committee includes representatives of all members of the school community including pupils, teachers, governors and parents.

The Eco Committee works as a team to tackle issues such as:

  • Waste management
  • Sustainable transport
  • Water management
  • Healthy eating
  • Saving energy
  • Looking after the school grounds
  • Litter
