3. Preventing pests

To prevent pests like rats, you need to keep the area clean and tidy.

Good hygiene will also keep your animals healthy and avoid unpleasant smells.

  • Don't leave food lying around for rats to eat
  • Use a plastic storage bin with a tight lid
  • Collect eggs daily
  • Keep an eye out for damage from gnawing rats and fix immediately
  • Use quality weld mesh around chicken run rather than wire
  • Bury the wire and bend it outwards under the soil
  • Floor your run with weld mesh
