Sheltered housing

Sheltered housing could suit you if you want to live independently but need a bit more support or if you want to live in a smaller home that's easier to manage.

It's usually only available to those aged 55 and over.

Some common features of sheltered housing include:

  • help from a scheme manager (warden), or support staff
  • 24-hour emergency help through an alarm system
  • communal areas, such as gardens or lounges
  • social activities for residents.

Features vary from scheme to scheme. Some schemes offer more support than others.

How to apply

To apply for sheltered housing you need to complete our Housing Options Registration Form.

You will need to provide documents to prove your identity and eligibility.

It can take up to 12 weeks for us to process your application.

Extra care housing

Extra care housing offers more support than sheltered housing but still allows you to live independently.

You live in a self-contained flat, with your own front door, but staff are usually available up to 24 hours per day to provide personal care and support services. These are tailored to you and can include help with washing, dressing, going to the toilet and taking medication. Domestic help, such as shopping and laundry, and meals may also be provided.

Common features of assisted living accommodation include:

  • help from a scheme manager (warden) or a team of support staff
  • 24-hour emergency help through an alarm system.
  • social activities arranged for the community.
  • a minimum age for residents, usually 55 or 60.
  • self-contained flats allow you to stay independent.
  • communal lounges allowing you to socialise as and when you feel like it.

How do I qualify for Extra Care Housing?

  • You need care/support services identified by Adult Services following a care assessment.
  • You must be a resident or have connections to Oldham
  • Tenants are usually older people over 60 years old, but there are some exceptions to this.

How is Extra Care Housing different to ordinary sheltered housing?

You have the added benefit of care/support or security staff available 24 hours a day, either on the premises or on call. The care staff are available from 7-11 during the day and the Security at night are available 11-7 each night. Scheme managers are there during working hours.

Living with a partner

You can move in together but you’re likely to be issued a fixed-term tenancy, which will be reviewed every few years to ensure we are still able to meet your needs and the needs of your partner.

Your family and friends can visit and help you as before, with the added support of the on-site care and support staff.

Cost

The amount you pay for your care will vary depending on your individual financial situation. A financial assessment will be carried out and you may have to pay for all the costs, or you may be entitled to a reduction.

We can arrange for someone from the Council to visit and discuss your financial situation. They will let you know what the charges will be and will check to see what benefits you are entitled to claim.

If your care and support needs or income change then your care charges may increase or decrease.

Pets

Pets are currently not allowed within our Extra Care schemes.
