Civil partnerships

What is a civil partnership and who is it for?

A civil partnership can be formed between two people of the same sex.

They must:

• Both be over 18 years old, or over 16 years old with parental consent
• Not already be married or in partnership
• Not be related to each other in a way which would prohibit the partnership being formed.

In a civil partnership ceremony, couples must acknowledge the legal words of the contract and sign the partnership schedule in front of an authorised person (e.g. Registrar) and 2 witnesses.

A ceremony is not required but couples can make the legal process part of a ceremony.

Give notice

To have a civil partnership you must give notice.

• Book an appointment to give notice at the Oldham Register Office
• Must be given 15 days before the civil partnership
• Can be given up to 12 months in advance
• Fee: £35.00

Foreign nationals without the right of abode in the UK

• You and your partner must attend a designated register office together

Fees

Fees must be paid at least 2 weeks before the marriage.

Fees payable to Oldham Registrars Office:

• Notice fee: £35.00 per person
• If a registrar is required to attend the civil partnership (Monday - Saturday): £269 (including certificate)
• If a registrar is required to attend the civil partnership (Sundays and Bank Holidays): £330 (including certificate)
