The Chair's Message

First Choice Homes Oldham was launched in April 2002 and has since been committed to improving the housing and environment for residents living in the town.
In April 2003, the successful outcome of an inspection by the Audit Commission generated £72 million of extra Government money for Council homes in Oldham. It was great news and allowed us to commence the work that will result in us achieving at least the Government’s Decent Homes standard. As Chair of the Board and a tenant, I am delighted that all our homes are being improved.
April 2004 saw the launch of our Tenant Participation Agreement which set out our commitment to involving tenants and leaseholders in helping to shape the way services are delivered and how every tenant and resident can become involved in, or influence decisions that affect the management of their homes.
In August 2005, we were again inspected by the Audit Commission and were delighted to receive a 2 star (good) rating with promising prospects for improvement. This superb result was the outcome of a tremendous continuing effort both by Board Members, staff, and tenants. During 2006, and into the future, this hard work will continue because we are so determined to improve services and achieve a better future for Council tenants and leaseholders in our town.
In addition, FCHO have, and will continue to work in partnership with OMBC and residents to develop a Private Finance Initiative to improve sheltered homes throughout the borough. This will benefit 1,700 sheltered customers with a total investment of over £100 million. We have also worked with housing associations and tenants on three other estates to undertake a stock transfer to improve these estates to the highest possible standards. This has led to a further £60 million being invested into improving these estates.
In these exciting times I look forward to letting you know more about the improvements we make.
It is a tremendous honour and opportunity to Chair the Board. We could not have come this far without the commitment of our customers, staff and Board Members. My profound thanks to everyone involved for all your hard work.
