Domestic Viloence

Domestic Violence is the emotional, physical, psychological or sexual abuse of a person by a partner, family member or someone with whom there is or has been a relationship. It can happen to anyone regardless of sex, status, age or ethnic origin.

How we can Help

We have specially trained staff who will help and support you by offering free, confidential advice and practical assistance.

Do not be afraid to ask us for help or for someone to talk to.

If you need to move out of your home because of the threat of violence or abuse, we can help you. You can also discuss your legal and housing options. We can help you find a safe place to stay whether you have children or not. This place of safety could be a hostel, refuge or temporary flat depending on your personal circumstances and what is available.

We are a member of the Oldham Crime Reduction Partnership and a key participant in the Domestic Violence Task Force. The partnership aims to reduce the harm caused by domestic violence in Oldham.

Moving out of Oldham

If you do not feel safe living in Oldham you may wish to move out of the area. We can help you by contacting other agencies on your behalf.

Protecting Yourself from Domestic Violence

We can explain in detail the legal options available to you, these include:

An Occupation Order, which can:

  • Decide what rights you or the violent person has to live in the home
  • Order the violent person to leave the home
  • Order the violent person to allow you to enter or stay in the home

A Non-Molestation Order, which relates to behaviour, and can:

  • Stop someone being violent, threatening or harassing you or any member of your household

Any family solicitor can also offer you more detailed advice regarding these options.

If you are claiming Income Support or have a low income you may be able to get Legal Aid to pay for legal advice.
