The BME Strategy reflects FCHOs vision and continued commitment to providing equal and inclusive housing services, which are accessible to the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities and delivered in a culturally appropriate way. It has been drawn up as a result of bringing together research, and consultation with our partners and the BME communities, and complies with current legislation and good practice in the area of race equality and community cohesion.

The Strategy outlines how FCHO intend to eliminate housing and related disadvantage in Oldham’s BME communities and will assist FCHO and its partners to gain a better understanding of the needs and aspirations of BME communities in Oldham, and through this meet those needs. It has certainly reinforced our belief that diverse groups of people have varying needs, which have to be met through different ways of working, but under a cohesive framework. However, it cannot work in isolation. Its’ success depends on being inclusive and ensuring that it is ‘owned’ by all communities, partners, staff and members; and being embedded in the wider business and corporate planning process.

The Strategy has an action plan with clear outputs and outcomes and timescales for achieving these and is reviewed, reported on and updated on an annual basis.

What do we mean by Equality?

Equality is about ensuring people are not unfairly discriminated against and giving everyone the same opportunities.

What do we mean by Diversity?

Diversity is about respecting and valuing differences whether they are visible or not, regardless of race, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, or any other differences.

Diversity is about recognising that not all people are the same but that people have different skills, experiences, backgrounds and knowledge to offer that are equally valuable.
