How you can help to stop the problem yourself
Sometimes your neighbour might not realise that he is causing you problems. Sometimes people have what we call “clash of lifestyles”.
It can help to have a quiet word with your neighbour and just explain that his TV is very loud or that taxis turning up at 2am are waking you up. Involving FCHO or other Agencies can sometimes make problems worse so trying to tackle the problem yourself can help to resolve it amicably.
Try to:
- Talk to your neighbour when you are feeling calm about the situation, not when you are angry or distressed
- Think about what you want to say, maybe make some notes beforehand
- Tell your neighbour what effect it is having on you eg sleepless nights
- Listen reasonably to what they have to say
- Be prepared to reach a compromise
Don’t put yourself at risk. If you feel that your neighbour is becoming angry or violent, walk away.
FCHO employ a mediation service to mediate between neighbours who are in dispute. If you would like to use the service please speak to your Housing Officer.
