Oldham Beyond is an inspirational vision, which is guiding the physical regeneration of the whole Borough up to 2020
In July 2003, the Oldham Partnership (Oldham’s Local Strategic Partnership) and the Northwest Regional Development Agency appointed an international team of regeneration specialists, led by Urbed, to identify the Oldham Beyond vision.
The team undertook in-depth analysis and extensive consultation, which included talking to more than 2,000 residents in the ‘Thought Bubble’ (an inflatable room that toured the Borough). They then set out the vision in a series of reports that were produced in April 2004:
A Vision for the Borough of Oldham (1.7Mb PDF)
The Heart of Oldham (4.36Mb PDF) This focuses on Oldham Town Centre
The Oldham Net (4.26Mb PDF) This looks at seven projects in various parts of the Borough.
Werneth/Freehold – This considers the area in terms of Housing Market Renewal
Some of the regeneration proposals within the vision are:
Development of Hollinwood at Junction 22 of the M60 into a sub-regional, business location
Expansion of the further- and higher-education institutions in Oldham Town Centre
Creation of a range of quality homes as part of Housing Market Renewal
Improvement of the local town centres as focal points for local communities
Extension of Greater Manchester’s Metrolink network to Oldham
The vision was awarded for its ‘originality and innovation in regeneration’ by the Northwest Centre for Regeneration Excellence in its Exemplar Programme for 2004-2005.
The Sustainable Community Strategy identifies a long-term vision for improving Oldham’s economic, social and environmental wellbeing. Oldham Beyond is an important element in this document, demonstrating how physical regeneration supports the improvement of quality of life and services in the Borough.
