Supporting People funding helps people to live independently. This could be by helping people establish independence e.g. moving from a hostel to their own flat or by helping people stay independent e.g. a support worker visiting an older person in their own home.
Supporting People funding is normally paid to providers of services for example to provide a warden in sheltered housing, supported housing for people who have been homeless, floating support to visit people in their own homes.
You can find out more about Supporting People from the national website
Supporting People services offer housing-related support. That is support to help people live safely and successfully in their own homes.
For example this could be
Help with managing money, claiming benefits and paying bills
Help with keeping safe – for example an emergency alarm for older people
Help to resettle into independent accommodation
Help to get into education, training or employment
Types of people that might be supported include:
A homeless person who needs support
A care leaver or other young person who needs support
A woman fleeing domestic violence
An older person who needs support
An offender or ex-offender
Someone else who needs support to establish independence or carry on living independently
Services that work with people for up to two years are free. Longer term services can be charged for but if you are getting Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit the service will be free.
Even if you are not getting these benefits you can ask for a financial assessment which looks at how much you have coming in each week and how much you have in savings – you may still be able to get a free service.
