What is Supporting People?

Supporting People funding helps people to live independently. This could be by helping people establish independence e.g. moving from a hostel to their own flat or by helping people stay independent e.g. a support worker visiting an older person in their own home.

Supporting People funding is normally paid to providers of services for example to provide a warden in sheltered housing, supported housing for people who have been homeless, floating support to visit people in their own homes.

Who pays for Supporting People services?

Services that work with people for up to two years are free. Longer term services can be charged for but if you are getting Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit the service will be free.

Even if you are not getting these benefits you can ask for a financial assessment which looks at how much you have coming in each week and how much you have in savings – you may still be able to get a free service.
