International Day of Disabled People

Wednesday 3 December 2008 10am - 4pm (drop-in) The Link Centre, Union Street, Oldham

Disabled people are being invited to find out about employment opportunities available in Oldham and celebrate the developments, changes and the impact of new opportunities at a special event organised as part of International Day of Disabled People.

The theme of the event is dignity and justice and your right to work. As part of the event representatives from the Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People and Oldham Council’s Adult and Community Services directorate will perform drama pieces showing how employment opportunities for disabled people has changed over the years.

As well as the drama performances there will also be information stalls covering all aspects of employment, benefits and job issues. Stalls will include representatives from JobCentre Plus, Access to Work, Connexions, Remploy, Breakthrough, Standguide, The Shaw Trust, Greater Manchester Coalition for Disabled People and a range of stalls from Oldham council with information about work opportunities and supported employment.

A BSL interpreter will also be on hand to offer assistance and refreshments will be available.

Oldham Disability Information Point

Oldham Disability Information Point is a resource, which provides information to disabled people, carers/parents, staff and students. It is run by service users, Adult and Community Services staff and volunteers with the aim of improving access to information for disabled people.

As well as information specifically about disability, Oldham Disability Information Point carries a wide range of ‘life’ information in a range of formats. This includes information about:

All the information at Oldham Disability Information Point (wherever available) is provided in accessible formats such as in Braille, large print, audio, pictorial and in other languages. The Point provides video viewing and audio listening equipment as well as a PC for Internet access. We also hold regular information events.
