Its a fact that the average person throws away 74kgs of organic waste a year, equivalent to 1077 banana skins. This waste could be recycled and composted so get started!
Composting is nature's way of recycling. Leaves, grass, fruit and vegetable peelings, cardboard and paper are valuable materials just waiting to be turned into a great fertiliser. You can produce great compost at home by mixing your wet, 'green' materials (e.g.peelings and grass clippings) with dry, 'brown' materials (twigs, cardboard and paper). Compost can be kept in an open pile in the garden, or you may find it preferable to build your own compost box. However, specialised bins help keep piles neat and out of reach of children and pets, as well as helping to retain heat and moisture which speed up the composting process. The compost bin acts like a simmering pot and produces a black, crumbly, humus rich top soil.
Compost bins are currently available to buy at reduced prices and delivery is free. For further details and to order a composter, please print off an application form (PDF 454Kb), go online at recyclenow's 'Compost at Home' webpage or call 0845 077 0757 and quote ref: GROW.

An alternative to the compost bin for people with small or no gardens is a wormery. A wormery consists of a tough plastic or glass container with a sealed lid, which is used with a special type of worm.
These worms can compost virtually any organic kitchen waste including vegetable peelings, tea leaves, coffee grounds, stale bread and hoover dust and produce high quality compost plus a concentrated. liquid feed.
Good Garden Centres will sell wormeries, and products can be found on the Internet.
