Another 20,000 properties are now able to participate in Oldham’s new Managed Weekly Collection Scheme.
Residents on this scheme have received a small brown bin to replace their black box, but we realise that this might not suit all householders. So residents can keep their black box if they prefer, or ask for a full size brown bin.
All food waste is also collected from these properties. Residents just place all food leftovers/ waste in a small kitchen caddy. A biodegradable liner or newspaper can be used to line this caddy to make the process of collecting food easier. When the kitchen caddy is full the contents can be transferred into the larger outside caddy, which is collected weekly.
In the first week of collection the grey rubbish bin and the paper/card sack are emptied, along with the food caddy. In the second week the brown bin, garden green bin (if residents have one) and again the food caddy are collected. The collections then alternate between these two weeks.
This scheme has been so successful in the pilot areas that covered parts of Shaw and Chadderton that it is set to be expanded over the next year to the majority of Oldham’s households. Residents on the pilot scheme achieved a fantastic recycling rate of almost 40%! Compare this to Oldham’s average recycling rate for last year of 20%.
Oldham Council’s Waste Minimisation Manager Mark Husdan said, “This new system will help Oldham’s residents to recycle more of their rubbish and thus reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill, making Oldham a greener place.”
