The Borough has a rich and diverse heritage of historic buildings and areas. There are over 700 Listed Buildings in the Borough and 36 Conservation Areas.

The Listed Buildings range from the weaver's cottages in Saddleworth to some of the large former cotton mills in the West of the borough through to fine civic buildings such as the Old Town Hall in Oldham town centre.

Equally, there is great variety and diversity within the Borough's Conservation Areas from small hamlets such as Bleak Hey Nook, to planned development such as the Oldham Garden Suburb / Hollins Green Conservation Area.

The Council has a statutory duty to protect and enhance both listed buildings and conservation areas through the planning system.

Works to listed buildings or those in conservation
areas may require specific consent from the
Council over and above any requirement for planning permission and you should contact Planning Services prior to the commencement of any work for clarification.

The links to the right provide more specific details of the Borough's listed buildings and conservation areas and information on how to apply for consent for works, and includes the relevant application forms.

Planning Services also manages the Blue Plaque scheme, which recognizes famous people or events across the Borough.

For further advice and specific enquiries regarding the historic environment please contact Planning Services.
