Snowplough at work

Gritting and snow clearance

Priorities

  1. A62/Huddersfield Road (trans-Pennine route) - keep open

  2. A672/Ripponden Road - treated and kept open (unless use of resources on this road prevents keeping the A62 open)

  3. A635/Holmfirth Road and the A640/Huddersfield Road - closed to trans-Pennine traffic during adverse conditions

During bad weather there will probably be disruption to traffic while main traffic routes are gritted first.

Gritting routes

When ice or snow is predicted the Council pre-salts 7 routes (most principal, classified and major bus routes)

After treating these routes, resources will be directed onto other roads.

Request gritting to a minor road

Report an empty grit bin

Forecasting and monitoring

The Council stays in touch with the meteorological office to hear about bad weather early.

Surface condition and wind speed information is collected from weather sensors in the road to help predict surface temperatures in the area.

Weather forecasts and road conditions are assessed day and night.
