School crossing patrols are primarily for children, but are for adults too.
Drivers must stop when the sign is displayed. Failure to do so is a traffic offence.
To legally stop traffic a patroller must:
Wear a high visibility coat and a hat
Display a stop sign (except at light-controlled crossings)
