The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is a new government regulation, which will introduce mandatory carbon emissions trading for large organisations. Oldham Council is preparing for this new legislation via a voluntary scheme run by the The Local Government Information Unit. The scheme is designed to help prepare for the CRC regulations, whilst helping to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. It is a simulation carbon-trading scheme between participating local authorities, and an opportunity to showcase our forward thinking within the local authority arena.
Oldham Council is part of a pioneering project to support the development of sustainable energy communities. This project involves a number of partners across Europe, including Italy, Poland, Spain, Greece and Sweden, and will support a number of energy themes including the use of local community planning for the efficient supply, distribution and use of renewable energy sources. Further details can be found at the projects website.
Oldham Council has been specifically chosen to work with the Energy Saving Trust to tackle Climate Change and reduce the borough's carbon emissions. As a council that is recognised as being highly motivated and has demonstrated a dedication to tackling sustainable energy issues, the Energy Saving Trust will work with the council on using energy more sustainably focusing on housing, transport and the wider community.
Oldham Council has signed up to the Nottingham Declaration and recognises that Climate Change is likely to be one of the key drivers of change within our community this century. The council will use this opportunity to lead the response at a local level to help in playing a major role in delivering the national Climate Change programme. The council has developed a Carbon Management Action Plan to achieve a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations, specifically energy sourcing and use, street lighting, travel and transport.
