Excellence in Cities is a targeted programme of support for schools in deprived areas of the country. It offers a real chance to transform urban secondary education in these areas where standards have been low for a period of time. Primary schools have now been included with a new expansion of Primary support; an investment of over £50m from 2004 2006 will ensure that LEA’s and Partnerships are able to provide similar support to everyone of their most disadvantaged schools. National results show that EiC initiatives are beginning to pay off: www.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/sie/eic

The Government introduced Excellence in Cities (EiC) in three phases from March 1999 to September 2000 with Oldham coming on board with the initiative in September 2001.
