Welcome to the Children, Young People and Families directorate's Community
Cohesion Web Page.
Here you will find updated reports and documents which detail initiatives
being run by the department and strategic plans that have been set for Oldham Schools.
“Oldham is a place in which all its members can learn, live, work and
flourish in harmony and equality, secure in their own cultural traditions and respectful of those of
others. The people of Oldham know and enact their rights and responsibilities as citizens of a culturally
diverse borough”
The above statement is the vision of a cohesive, harmonious Oldham which
features prominently in a draft Community Cohesion Strategy for Oldham Education and Cultural Services
Department and Oldham Schools.
A brief mission statement for schools has been drafted to highlight
the core focus of this Department:
“To broaden, challenge and enrich pupils’ thinking and actions/behaviour
in order to enable them to contribute fully to the development of a cohesive and harmonious Oldham”
Activity to promote Community Cohesion is grouped together into 6 strands:
- Connecting Communities
- Providing Curriculum Based Initiatives
- Developing and Implementing Policy
- Providing Staff Development and Training
- Creating a more balanced workforce
- Raising the achievement of under performing groups
In
the pursuit of excellence and best practice, the Department is committed to establishing strong partnerships
and drawing on expertise at local, regional and national level. Partnership working is established with
a number of organisations including the following:
- Sport Participation and Cultural Equality (SPACE) in relation to cultural
and race awareness training.
- M6 Theatre in Education Company for drama projects particularly with schools in the School
Linking Project.
- The Pacific Institute in relation to Investment in Excellence Training.
- The Society for Advanced Philosophical Enquiry in Education (SAPERE) in relation to Philosophical
Enquiry Training.
- Mediation Northern Ireland in relation to connecting communities and conflict resolution.
- The Warrington Peace Centre in relation to working on conflict resolution with young children.
