One of the Governments Public Service Agreement (PSA) targets is to
“enhance the take-up of sporting opportunities for 5-16 year olds by
increasing the percentage of school children who spend a minimum of two hours each week on high quality
PE and school sport within and beyond the curriculum to 85% by 2008.” Oldham has exceeded the national
target, with a borough average of 91% for 2006/07.
This has recently be expanded and funding has been agreed until 2011
now with the target of all young people being offered 5 hours of sport each week, which will comprise
of 2 hours high quality PE and school sport and, in addition, the opportunity for at least a further
3 hours beyond the school day. This will have huge benefits for all young people.
A main influence to ensuring effective local delivery of the national
strategy is the infrastructure of School Sport Partnerships comprising of:
- 2 hub schools, Failsworth and Counthill
- Partnership Development Managers based at each hub school
- School Sport Co-ordinators based in each secondary school in the borough
- Primary Link Teachers based in every primary and infant school in the borough.
Also
key to achieving the 5-hour offer are:
- Sport Development Units
- Sports Clubs
- Other Community Deliverers
- Competition Frameworks
