Oldham Council – Having Your Say

listening to and learning from Oldham Residents. The Consulting with residents helps us to understand what the Council does well and where improvements could be made.

We involve Oldham residents in a number of different ways, including through our citizens’ panel, community councils and occasional consultation such as surveys.

We also have a duty carry surveys in Oldham for the Government including the General Residents Survey (Listening to your views).

Oldham Council Budget Simulator

The Council would like to thank the (almost) 500 people who took the time to complete the Budget Simulator. Your views will be taken into account by both the Cabinet and Council at their December meetings and also in the final budget setting meeting in February 08.

Residents’ Surveys

The Council is required by the Government to carry out a general survey of residents and to inform performance indicators (BVPIs). This survey, sent to randomly selected households, has to be carried out every three years; however the Council feels that it is helpful to carry out the survey more often. The survey covers questions on services such as waste, recycling and libraries, and asks you what’s most important to you about where you live.

Citizens’ Panel

The Council is working with BMG Research, an independent market research company, who help manage the citizens’ panel for us.

What is the Citizens’ Panel?

A panel has been formed of residents who agreed to take part in research to give feedback on local services and facilities. The residents who take part will represent a cross-section of people who live in Oldham. They will be young people and adults of all ages and from various walks of life.

What does being a member involve?

Panel members will be sent a short questionnaire to fill in and return, free of charge, three times a year. Each year, a third of the Panel will be replaced, so that other residents have a chance to take part. This means that residents could be part of the Panel for between 1 and 3 years. Panel members might also be invited to participate in other research from time-to-time. The research is confidential and the results will not identify individuals. You will be given regular feedback on what the panel said and any decisions made as a result.

Why have a Citizens’ Panel?

The panel will allow residents to tell elected members and officers about their experiences of living in Oldham and you could be helping to shape the future of Oldham. You will be able to inform decisions made by the Council.

How are people selected to join the Citizens’ Panel?

People’s addresses, not named individuals, have been chosen at random by BMG from Royal Mail’s Postal Address File in each of Oldham’s 20 wards.

How do I join?

As already mentioned, a random number of residents were asked to join the panel but if you are interested in making a valuable contribution towards shaping the future of Oldham please contact Sarah Robinson at BMG Research on 0121 333 6006 or call at Oldham Council on 0161 770 4685 for further information.
