Aftercare Football Tournament

The Oldham Aftercare Football Team were the Champions of the 2007 tournament and, in turn, were tasked with hosting the 2008 tournament.  The Oldham Aftercare service approached Sport Development to assist in the planning and delivery of the event.

The Oldham tournament witnessed the largest number of participants to date with over 260 young people aged 16-24 taking part. There were 24 male teams and 8 female teams all competing in their respective competitions.

The event offered alternative activities to include the Army recruitment van and climbing wall, Oldham Athletics’ penalty shoot out, DJ workshops and information stands.

  • The army made contact with 22 potential recruits and planned further career interviews to outline opportunities within the army.
  • The 3 Oldham teams took part in regular structured coaching sessions leading up to the tournament.
  • The training still takes place with the Sport Development staff working with the young people towards sports leadership qualifications and experience.
  • 1 member of the Oldham male’s team is now a regular volunteer for Sport Development.

The Oldham male team got knocked out in the semi-finals to Rochdale and St Helens went on to lift the trophy.  The female team were victorious in lifting the plate cup in a closely contested final with the Stockport Dialstonettes.

School Swimming Service – Galas/Leagues 07

During the spring and summer terms we organise numerous aquatic events in addition to our normal programme.

Senior Schools Heats and Championships

These took place at Hulme Pool (heats) and Oldham Sports Centre (Championships) during the spring term. Approximately 300 young people between the ages of 11 – 18yrs took part in the events.

Primary Leagues

In April and May approximately 220 children from 23 of the borough’s primary schools competed in weekly swimming leagues at various pools.

Primary Galas

Over 230 children from 33 primary schools participated in 4 annual swimming galas, which were held in early July. 3 of the galas are ‘fun based’ with various games and activities. These galas are open to less able swimmers who would not normally have the opportunity to compete in such an event. July also saw our first ‘Mini Water Polo’ tournament, when 4 schools from Saddleworth took part.

Division 7

Oldham is back on the map as the following five swimmers qualified to represent Division 7 at the National's. These will be held on 26th and 27th October at Manchester Aquatics.
