Oldham Sport Development Locality Working

sport development

Sport Development has recently adopted a locality based approach.  In line with the Oldham Council locality agenda Sport Development now has a presence within the 6 localities -

  • Failsworth & Hollinwood
  • Chadderton
  • East Oldham
  • West Oldham
  • Saddleworth & Lees
  • Royton & Shaw

Sport Development has been involved in the core planning group of the Early Intervention Support Teams (EIST) across the localities.  The Early Intervention Support Team aims to promote a culture that encourages partnership working across the Children, Young People and Families directorate, Schools, PCT, GMP, private and voluntary community faith groups.  Sport Development aims to implement provision and activity to answer the needs of the locality, using information from the group and intelligence from partners.  Information from the GMP and the Youth Service enables services to identify ‘Hot Spot’ areas with high levels anti-social behaviour and youth annoyance.  The locality officer represents Sport Development at these forums and uses partnership links to develop appropriate interventions across the borough.

Using information from different surveys and partners Sport Development can identify low areas of participation.  The locality officer has responsibility to make sure that there is a balanced level of provision across the borough (subject to funding).

Targeted provision is delivered for under represented groups within the borough.  Sport Development has undertaken a mapping exercise to assess current available provision for these target groups and identify areas of low participation.  In partnership with various services Sport Development implements provision to answer the needs of the group.  Consultation has been carried out with groups of girls, Black an Minority Ethnic groups and young people with a disability (and their families) to gain levels of interest and allow the young people to become involved in the planning and delivery of this provision.
